The continental shelf east and west of Lagos [long.2o.04.00E to long.4o 00’.00”E] is narrow shelf ranging in width between 25 to 30 kilometers. Echograms from several NIOMR’s cruises reveal the presence of some isolated and in some cases continuous bands of dead Holocene coral banks, within the middle to outer continental shelf [40-120m depth]. The most prominent of these structures are ones occurring between 75-100m of water and running almost parallel to the coastline. The dead coral structures are non-reef forms. They are found either as continuous Bands of rough bottom with width ranging between, 100 to 3,500m or in isolated pinnacled shapes. The pinnacled forms reach heights of over 7 meters in some cases. These coral structures pose obstructions to... |

The demersal phase (from 18th to November 01th, 1995) of cruise T95/10/04 DO, covered an area of 15632,6 km2 between 00º36'0”N-80º34'3”O and 03º22'8”S-80º49'5”O, of the Ecuadorian Continental Plataform, the depth range from 14 to 115 meters. 120 species were recorded, divided into 85 osseous fish species, three sharks, 11 ray, 18 crustaceans, two molluscan and one holothurid (sea cucumber). Total biomass was estimated as 95297,5 t; with 97,3% of this biomass distributed between 01º00'0”S and 03º23'S. The most abundant species were: barriga juma (Larimus spp) (11153 t), corvina (Cynoscion spp) (4523 t), gallineta (Prionotus spp) (55651 t), perela (Palabrax callaensis) (3774 t) and ravi junco (Centrithmus signifer) (2407 t). |

The abundance, distribution and structure of the zooplankton community in southern Patagonia (SW Atlantic Ocean) were studied during late summer (March-April 2000) from samples obtained with Nackthai (390 ~km) and Multinet (150 ~km) samplers. Total concentrations of zooplankton biomass, integrated in the water column, ranged between 1.0 and 14.5 g m-2 (dry weight) and reached the highest values in the mid and outer shelf off Bahía Grande (Santa Cruz Prov., Argentina) (51~'S). The < 5 mm size fraction, composed mainly of copepods represented, on average, 45% of the total; amphipods and euphausiids accounted for 20% and 31%, respectively. Amphipods were, almost exclusively, Themisto gaudichaudii and euphausiids most abundant species Euphausia lucens and... |

Nineteen lightday rectangular transects were made 16 in the area of the Gulf of Guayaquil (Ecuador), and 3 in an oceanic area at the west of the Gulf of Guayaquil, this was the second part of research cruise, oriented to the evaluation of the small pelagic fish stocks, it was made between september 14th and 27th, 1995. The SIMRAD EK-500 acoustic system was used, installed on board of the National Research Institute (INP) R/V Tohallí. At the same time, people from the INP's Fisheries Observer Program were on four private enterprises vessels, while they were fishing in the same Gulf's area. They also made the biological sample of the commercial catch, for future relation with the results from the acoustic evaluation. The V/R Tohallí principal catch was jack... |

The stock estimates obtained during the demersal fish resources survey in 1980-1985 were used to estimate the potential yields of demersal stocks of the Ecuadorian Continental Shelf. The difficulties of predicting yields for multispecies fisheries are discussed and modified version of the Gulland model was adopted. The potential realizable yields for multispecies fisheries are discussed and a modified version of the Gulland model was adopted. The potential realizable yield was calculated to be between 15,000 t and 20,000 t per year, of which 2,000 t is good quality fish, 5,000 t per year of small and medium fish and 8,000 t of gurnards. The majority of these resources are at present being fished at around their optimum levels and any further developments... |

Using two-way indicator species and detrended correspondence analysis, species on the continental shelf and upper slope of Ghana were classified into 6assemblages. The structure of the assemblages is determined primarily by depth and type of sediment on the seabed. There are clear faunal discontinuities around 30-40, 100, and 200m depth. The dynamics of the assemblages are influenced by physico-chemical parameters of the water masses, mainly temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen, which are periodically modified by the seasonal coastal upwelling that occurs in the area. The observed changes in the composition and relative importance of species in the assemblages can be related to increased fishing activity and environmental forcing. |
