Briozoos cheilostomados del Caribe colombiano OceanDocs
Florez-Romero, P.; Montoya-Cadavid, E.; Reyes-Forero, J.; Santodomingo, N..

Coral bank obstructions to trawling in the middle to outer continental shelf east and west of Lagos. OceanDocs
Awosika, L.F..
The continental shelf east and west of Lagos [long.2o.04.00E to long.4o 00’.00”E] is narrow shelf ranging in width between 25 to 30 kilometers. Echograms from several NIOMR’s cruises reveal the presence of some isolated and in some cases continuous bands of dead Holocene coral banks, within the middle to outer continental shelf [40-120m depth]. The most prominent of these structures are ones occurring between 75-100m of water and running almost parallel to the coastline. The dead coral structures are non-reef forms. They are found either as continuous Bands of rough bottom with width ranging between, 100 to 3,500m or in isolated pinnacled shapes. The pinnacled forms reach heights of over 7 meters in some cases. These coral structures pose obstructions to...

Corrientes en la plataforma continental OceanDocs
Piola, A.R.; Rivas, A..
In this chapter the main features of the currents on the Argentine continental shelf are described. Due to the scarcity of direct current observations, adequate to resolve the mean flow, the circulation of the continental shelf is studied based on property distributions and models. These analyses indicate that the mean flowover the continental shelf varies between 1 and 2 Sverdrups (1Sverdrup = 1x106 m3 s-1)towards the NNE. A synthesis of results of studies of higher frequency motions is also presented. The most relevant results derived from long term direct current observations on the continental shelf near 43°S are discussed. The mean current velocities in the inner and mid-shelf regions vary between 0,05 and 0,10 m/s towards the NNE, in agreement with...

Parker, G.; Paterlini, M.C.; Violante, R..
A synthesis is given of the present knowledge of the topographic and sediment characters of the sea floor of the Argentine Sea. After considering some general characters of passive continental margins the Argentine characteristics are described. Various 'physiographic provinces' are differentiated. The corresponding to the continental shelf is the most extensive on its several 'terraces' associated with Plio-Pleistocene sea level changes. Soft sediments are dominant, mainly being composed of sand with minor but varied quantities of shells and mud. Harder bottoms, composed of loose gravel and rocky outcrops are also present. The information presented here is not sufficient for evaluating the natural resources of the Argentine Sea or for solving sovereignty...

The stock estimates obtained during the demersal fish resources survey in 1980-1985 were used to estimate the potential yields of demersal stocks of the Ecuadorian Continental Shelf. The difficulties of predicting yields for multispecies fisheries are discussed and modified version of the Gulland model was adopted. The potential realizable yields for multispecies fisheries are discussed and a modified version of the Gulland model was adopted. The potential realizable yield was calculated to be between 15,000 t and 20,000 t per year, of which 2,000 t is good quality fish, 5,000 t per year of small and medium fish and 8,000 t of gurnards. The majority of these resources are at present being fished at around their optimum levels and any further developments...

Guerrero, R.A.; Piola, A.R..
The current knowledge on the argentine continental shelf water masses is summarized in this paper. These water masses are characterized as a function of water types fed by the boundary currents and the modifications due to continental runoff, and water energy exchange with the atmosphere. Based on sea surface salinity distributions and the temperature-salinity characteristics, three masses are described: coastal waters, mid-shelf waters and slope waters. The main freshwater sources found along the coast are identified, as well as high salinity formation areas. The vertical stratification, mainly controlled by temperature, is analyzed along the annual cycle. The stratification cycle is mainly driven by the heat exchange between the atmosphere and the ocean....

During a baseline survey of the shallow bottoms (10-50 m) of the southern continental shelf of the Colombian Caribbean, a total of 35 molluscan species belonging to 24 families was collected. Three main molluscan bottom assemblages were recognized according to species composition and abundance, whose distribution seems likely to be controlled rather by depth than by sediment features. Twenty four of the species were not recorded before from this area of the Colombian Caribbean.

Structure and Dynamics of demersal assemblages on the continental shelf and upper slope off Ghana, West Africa OceanDocs
Koranteng, K.A.
Using two-way indicator species and detrended correspondence analysis, species on the continental shelf and upper slope of Ghana were classified into 6assemblages. The structure of the assemblages is determined primarily by depth and type of sediment on the seabed. There are clear faunal discontinuities around 30-40, 100, and 200m depth. The dynamics of the assemblages are influenced by physico-chemical parameters of the water masses, mainly temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen, which are periodically modified by the seasonal coastal upwelling that occurs in the area. The observed changes in the composition and relative importance of species in the assemblages can be related to increased fishing activity and environmental forcing.
